ELECTRICITY IN THE SERVICE OF MAN
[Notes: In daily life: Cooking food, moving fans, working water pumps, running radio, TV, etc. -electric lift--removal of darkness. In industry:runs machines, increases production, lessens manual labour. In transport: trams & trains. In medical treatment great revolution-X'ray for diagnosis and treatment of diseases. ]
Electricity is the Aladdin's lamp to us. We are only to press the button and like Aladdin's giant (in The Tales from Arabian Nights) it does everything for us. Thanks to Faraday that he discovered electricity and made it man's servant, whereas our primitive forefa- thers got terribly afraid when they saw the flashes of lightning and ran to take shelter in their caves.
Electricity plays a very important role in our daily life. It cooks us food. It moves fans over our heads to keep us cool during hot summer days. It works water pumps and supplies water to us. It runs the radio and the television to give us relaxation. The electric lift carries us up and down a skyscraper. It removes the depressing darkness of the night. Modern industrial development is the gift of electricity. Electrici- ty runs machines in mills and factories. It has lessened manual labour, but has made for greater production and fine finish of produce. Modern transport system owes not a little to it. Electricity moves trams and is replacing steam more and more in driving trains. The net-works of telegraph lines now carry messages to the different parts of the globe. Electricity has revolutionizedthe system of medical treatment. X'rays now help doctors to diagnose many diseases and treat some, and it is electricity which has made it possible. It has made the manufacture of life-saving drugs easy and quick.
Electricity is the life-force of modern civilisation. That is why a few hours' loadshedding means disaster to man
