Notes: Time & place of the fair - description: of stalls and the things offered for sale-- the crowd what attracted the crowd most - the relief the fair brought to the villagers.

During the last puja vacation I visited a village fair. It sat in a mango-garden on the outskirts of our village on the occasion of the. Durga Puja. Temporary stalls were set up. They were arranged in rows and those dealing in the same kind of articles clustered together. The shops offered for sale almost all the articles necessary in our day-to-day life as well as those necessary for women's luxury and children's amusement. They were all crowded. Men and Women crowded in front of stationary shops, while children gathered round toy-shops. There was a a merry-go-round at one corner of the fair. It was a source of great amusement to the children. There was hardly a child who did not have a ride on a wooden horse. The main object of attraction to the villagers in general was, however, the cricus-show. Men, women and children-all attended the circus-show. Their wonder knew no bounds when they saw a girl walk on a rope or an elephant sit on a chair and drink tea out of a cup. The spectacle of a joker falling down to the ground in his attempt to walk on the rope provided them with great fun.
