T

here is a long vacation of three months after the H.S. Examination. The students spend this vacation in different ways. Some devote it to the improvement of their health. Many pass it by going out on pleasure trips with their friends and relatives. Some devote it to social service.

I shall spend the vacation in serving the people who pine in poverty, ignorance and supertitions. With this end in view I shall go back to my village, and with the help of the villagers get it cleared of the jungles which are the dens of mosquitoes and snakes. The clearance of the jungles will help to check the spread of malaria which has of late made its appearence in many villages. I shall also start, along with some of my friends, a night school where adult villagers will be given lessons in the Three R's, the modern, scientific methods of cultivation and irrigation. We shall also teach them the laws of health and hygience, the causes of epidemic diseases like Cholera, blood-dysentery and the ways these can be prevented and treated. We shall try to open their eyes to the evil effects of superstitions, child marriage, and their faith in the power of talismans and magic-the faith which helped such diseases as cholera and small pox to play havoc with them in

the past. Social service may not give me the pleasure that excursions, visits bring one but it will have an ennobling and purifying effect on my mind.
