A

ccidents happen frequently in a crowded city like Calcutta. I have read reports of street accidents in the newspapers. But I did not see any myself till the other day.

The other day I was going to school, and on my way I saw a horrible street accident. The blood in my veins seems to curdle as I think of it The accident took place around 10-30 A.M. I was walking long the Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Road. Suddenly an old man of seventy came out from a medicine store, and started crossing the road without looking left or right. But hardly had the unfortunate old man gone to the middle of the road when a state bus came up there at top speed. Sensing danger the driver put on the brakes. But the bus had run over the man before the driver could stop it. A piercing cry of pain was heard. Along with others I rushed to the spot and found the man lying in a pool of blood. Ishuddered with horror. A big crowd collected there. Some caught hold of the driver and manhandled him. The bus was set on fire. Soon the police arrived and dispersed the crowd. The man was sent to the hospital. There he was declared dead. I left the place with the painful realization that life is not worth an hour's purchase.
