M

an is fond of imagining himself as richer and more powerful than he actually is. I am not an exception. I often fancy becoming the chief minister of West Bengal, who can do and undo her destiny.

Had I been the chief minister of West Bengal I would have made West Bengal a prosperous state. I would have first embraked upon the task of rooting out corruption from the field of the laws against bribery. An employee found guilty of bribery would have been dismi-ssed from service and placed behind the bars. I would have made punctuality the primary condition of being in service. The greatest evil in India today is the big gap between the rich and the poor, and not poverty. The gap must be reduced for the steady progress of India. With this end in view I would have taken over all profit-making industries of West Bengal, dealt with black-marketeers, hoarders, adulterators with aniron hand. I would have ordered the police to check, at all costs, the anti-social activities which have been havoci-ngthe social peace over two decades. No country can progress unless the people are educated. As the chief minister I would have made education compulsory for all and free up to the undergraduate stage. I would have set up an adult education centre in every village. The people in Indian villages die like dogs and cats without proper medical treatment. So I would have arranged that every village should have a hospital or dispensary.

The problem of unemployment is a canker on the body social of West Bengal. To solve this problem I would have introduced self-e-mployment schemes and encouraged small-scale and cottage industries.
