LOADSHEDDING
Notes: Loadshedding-stoppage of supply of electricity. Inconveniences: water pumps, electric ovens, fans, lifts-all inoperative. Industry: production stops, machines not working-price of necessaries going up. Agriculture also affected. Socio-economic life: effected-additional expenses on candles and kerosene. Solution: more generation of power-undertaking of new power projects-repairing old units.
Loadshedding is the stoppage of the supply of electricity to the customers. It has now become quite a problem in some states of India. The inconveniences caused by loadshedding are regrettable. When the electric current stops water-pumps do not work and taps run dry; electric ovens do not operate and food remains uncooked; fans cease moving and we go on sweating. Loadshedding causes much concern to those who live on the eleventh or twelfth floor of a sky-scraper. Lifts become inoperativeand many may be trapped in them. Loadshedding at night seriously affects students. Both heavy and small industries are badly affected by power cuts.
Now-a-days machines in mills and factories are driven by electricity. When the electric current goes off, machines cease working and the production of goods necessary in our daily life comes to a halt. Agriculture suffers greatly because of frequent and prolonged power cuts in rural areas. Loadshedding has its effects on our socio-economic life. We have to make additional expenses for the purchase of candles and kerosene. Loadshedding contributes much to the rise in prices of hosiery goods, soaps, blades, books, ink, fertilisers, etc.
The best way to save the affected states from the curse of loadshedding is to provide for the generation of more power. With this end in view the Government should implement new power projects and repair the units that have been lying out of order for a long time.
