SCIENCE AND WAR
Notes: Science handmaid of war. Aeroplanes, tanks, huge warship, torpedos, submarines, etc. all adding to the destructive power of war. Atom and Hydrogen bombs-a dozen of them can totally destroy the world. War made a terrible affair by science-a world war = annihilation of mankind.
Science has now become the handmaid of war. Its power is now used to manufacture deadly weapons-weapons which can kill the maximum number of men in the minimum time. With the invention of the aeroplane which is a gift of science the destructive power of war has increased hundredfold. Aeroplanes not only give correct ideas about the enemy positions, but also destructive bombs are thrown from them upon the enemy. Land fighting has become very devastating after science has placed tanks at the disposal of nations. A tank can move inspite of heavy barrage from the enemy and it can seldom be put out of action. Science has enabled man to develop huge warships which are equipped with all kinds of long range guns. With the introduction of torpedos with which submarines are now-a-days equipped, water fighting has become a dangerous affair.
But the most destructive achievement of modern science is the invention of the atom bomb and the hydrogen bomb, a dozen of which are enough to wipe the whole human race out of existence. The nations with superior knowledge in science go on piling these bombs with the rusult that war tension is increasing day by day, The whole world now sits, as it were, in the crater of a volcano which may erupt at any moment and reduce it to ashes.
Science has made modern warfare a terrible affair. A war involving the whole world will mean annihilation of mankind. So man now lives under the fear of death.
