Notes: Public library collection of books, storehouse of thinkers. Usefulness: satisfies thrist for knowledge-textbooks not enough for knowledge-none can buy all kinds of books-Libraries spread culture.

A public library is a collection of books on various subjects. It is the store-house of the thinkers of different countries and of different ages. It is housed in a big huilding and financed by the government.. It is provided with reading rooms where people can read books, newspapers and magazines.

The usefulness of the public library can hardly be gainsaid. Man is born with thrist for knowledge which is endless. Text books a student has to read are not sufficient to quench his thrist of knowledge. To quench it he must read hundreds of books on different subjects. It is not possible for him, however rich he may be, to buy all these books. He must attach himself to a public library to get the books he wants to read.

The public library is one of the greatest and most effective medium for the spread of culture among the people at large. In a country like India where most people cannot afford to have education in schools and colleges, library is the only means of ministering to their intellectual development at which culture aims. They can borrow books they like from it and read them at home. In this way their reading habit will be developed and they will gain in knowledge. A public library is of great significance in the cultural development of a nation. So an attempt should be made to establish a public library in every village.
