A Visit to a Fortune-Teller: What They Actually Told Me
[Notes: Occasion-fortune-teller; an old man-staying in a temple-he examined your hand-told correctly about your date of birth, your name you surprized.]
I had a curious experience a few days ago. That day a friend came to me and said that a man had come to our village temple. That man, he informed me, could tell fortunes correctly. I grew curious and proposed that we should visit the man and test his knowledge. The friend agreed. We then rushed to the Kali temple.
The fortune teller was sitting on the verandah of the temple. He was an old man with long white beard. We went to him, paid him our compliments and requested him to tell our fortunes. The fortune--teller took me first. He looked very intently into my face and examined my right hand.
Then he asked for a piece of paper and a pen. We gave them to him. He wrote something on the paper and handed it over to me. He told me to hold it in my closed hand. He then told me to open my hand and look at the paper. When I looked at the paper, I was struck with amazement. He had written down my name and the date of my birth correctly, though my friend and I were complete strangers to him and he had never seen us before. I was reminded of the famous expression in Hamlet: "There are more things in heaven. and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy."
