The Evolution of Broadcasting: A History of the Radio

[Notes: What is radio? Effective medium of entertainment-songs, dramas, running commentary, special items for children and women-educative value-talks on various topics, news-bulletins, weather report-religious instructions-moulds public opinion.]

The redio is one of the greatest contributions of modern science. It is a kind of telegraphy or telephony which transmits news, views, songs, speeches etc. without the medium of wire. The credit of inventing it goes to the Italian scientist Marconi.

The radio is an effective medium of entertainment. It regales our ears with songs and music. It treats us to dramatic performances and entertains us with the running commentary of a thrilling football or cricket match. The radio programs include special items for children, women and students. Children are told interesting fairy tales. Women hear talks on the preparation of food, decoration of houses, etc. Students are treated to talks on their lessons. The radio has great educative value. It broadcasts talks of eminent persons on social, political, economic and agricultural topics. These talks considerably widen the horizon of our knowledge. The news-bulletins broadcasted at regular intervals keep us informed of what is happening at home and abroad. The radio provides us regularly with the reports of weather, the market prices of necessaries. It imparts to us religious and moral instructions. Through it the Government explains to us its present activities and its future plans of public welfare. It is also used as a medium of election campaign by the warring political parties.

It thus trains public mind and moulds public opinion. The radio is a blessing to us. It has kindled the light of knowledge for all, high or low, rich or poor, ignorant or learned. (241 words)
