DISCIPLINE IN ACADEMIC LIFE
Notes: Meaning: Obedience to established rules of conduct-absence of discipline= anarchy. Discipline-a must for students. Education going to the dogs if the students don't obey the rules of schools or colleges, don't respect teachers or fairly sit for the examinations. Students-future citizens. Discipline in academic life-a thing of the past in India now-manifestations of indiscipline: strikes, mass copying, senseless activities etc.-effects on society.]
Discipline is the backbone of the social life. It means obedience to established rules of conduct. Freedom is man's birth-right, no doubt. But man cannot do anything he likes. Unrestrictedfreedom leads to anarchy. Hence there arises the need of discipline-of obeying the rules which society frames from time to time to regulate and control the conduct of its citizens.

Discipline is a must in all the spheres of human life. But it is of special significance in academic life. Students must obey their teachers, follow the rules of their respective schools or colleges and prepare their lessons daily. They must sit for examinations strictly in complia- nce with the rules of examinations. The success of education depends on obedience on the part of students. If they give a fig for their teachers' advice, shout in classes and corridors and copy from books in examina- tions, the temple of learning will be turned into a den of chaos. In India discipline in academic life has, of late, become a thing of
the past. Students now waste their time and energy in senseless activities. They resort to strikes and demonstrations to satisfy such demands as have nothing to do with academic interest, and thereby vitiate the academic atmosphere. Students are the future citizens of the country. If they do not learn how to obey rules and regulations they cannot discipline themselves when they become ci citizens. The result will be that the whole social structure will crumble like house of cards.
